Here are a few facts about St Patrick’s Day to amaze your friends with on St Patrick’s Day:

  • St Patrick (387 – 461 AD) is the patron Saint of Ireland although he was born in Roman-Briton (now England).  His birth name was Maewyn Succat.
  • There are 33.7 million U.S. residents who are of Irish ancestry. That number is almost nine times the population of Ireland itself.
  • 19 Presidents of the United States proudly claim Irish heritage—including our first President, George Washington.
  • The very first St. Patrick’s Day parade was in Boston in 1737.  The largest parade in the US, held since 1762, is in New York City, and draws more than one million spectators each year.  The first parade in Dublin wasn’t until 1931.  In 1948 President Truman became the first president to attend a St. Patrick’s Day parade.

Celebrating St Valentine’s Day

Thursday, January 9th, 2014

The celebration of St Valentine’s Day can be traced to the ancient Roman holiday of the Lupercal.  Celebrated at the ides of February, Lupercalia was a fertility festival dedicated to Faunus, the Roman god of agriculture, as well as to the Roman founders Romulus and Remus.

It is believed that in 498 AD Pope Gelasius declared February 14 St Valentine’s Day in an effort to “Christianize” the pagan festival.  Valentine was a priest who had served during the third century in Rome.  When Emperor Claudius II decided that single men made better soldiers than those with wives and families, he outlawed marriage for young men. Valentine, realizing the injustice of the decree, defied Claudius and continued to perform marriages for young lovers in secret.

Valentine greetings were popular as far back as the Middle Ages, though written Valentine’s didn’t begin to appear until after 1400. The oldest known valentine still in existence today was a poem written in 1415 by Charles, Duke of Orleans, to his wife while he was imprisoned in the Tower of London following his capture at the Battle of Agincourt.  Several years later, it is believed that King Henry V hired a writer named John Lydgate to compose a valentine note to Catherine of Valois.

The most notorious St Valentine’s Day was 1929 when 6 people associated with Bugs Moran and 1 bystander were gunned down by members of Al Capone’s gang dressed as policemen.  Bugs Moran himself was on his way to the garage where the “massacre” occurred when he saw the “policemen” enter and managed to escape.

Today about 1 billion Valentine’s Day Cards, 110 million roses, mostly red, and 36 million boxes of chocolates are sold each year.  Those in the know, however, will rent a Top Hat Photo Booth for a truly memorable holiday.

Go Green at Your Holiday Party

One of our favorite things for a holiday party is the photo booth with a green screen.  The choices for digital backgrounds are virtually unlimited and can be matched with any holiday theme.  The photo booth can then apply the background at random sequentially or the guests can choose them for each shot.  The results are incredible images and roaring laughter.  A word of warning though – Don’t wear a green sweater or you may end up like this gentleman – Santa’s watching, naughty or nice!

How the Fiscal Cliff was Averted

Saturday, January 5th, 2013

John & Harry

‘Twas the night before New Year when all through the House

Both sides were pointing “He is the louse”.

The cliff was for certain that very night

For no one would budge without a dog fight.

The Prez was nestled all snug in his bed

While visions of re-election still danced in his head.

Then John in his jacket and Harry his cap

Said “One way to solve this – bring in Top Hat”

So into the photo booth they went arm in arm

For once they agreed – “What is the harm”.

One smile at the camera that almost looked real

That’s how it happened – the Fiscal Cliff deal.

Well almost.

Happy New Year from Top Hat Photo Booths!
